Jerry Cornic is a trumpet based solo band that is extending to other instruments : guitar, singing, rap, etc… Interview of Erwan Burban, leader.

- How would you define breizh soul ?

It’s the free popular expression of people leaving in Brittany and connected to the local culture. But we now define our music as Breizh Beat, with the reference of the afro-beat, which had the same approch of how to connect local old culture and global new musical experiences.

- How does old breton singing link to this kind of sound ?

Well breton music goes very well with jazz, and I think that’s a good way for newcomers to discover breton music. Breton voice is also very much like rap singing, that’s how I get on with DJs, putting a few breton themes every now and then.

- Would recommend other breton bands doing the same kind of stuff, or that inspired you ?

The inspiration came from outside of Brittany, with the CDs of ethiopian musiciens of the 70s (« Ethiopiques »). In Brittany, a lot of traditionnal musiciens are used to mix very good traditionnal music with new styles, since Stivell, but with Jerry Cornic it is the first time that there is a real fusion.

- Will we see you this summer in Brittany ?

Sorry, not before summer 2005, and maybe before outside Brittany.
